Cat5 cable

Cat5 refers to the Cat5e or Cat6 (see image of cat5 cable above) cables that you may be familiar with connecting your computer to a network or high speed cable modem for internet access. It is fast becoming used to distribute audio (and now even video) throughout homes and businesses. The cabling is cheap, readily available, easy to install and no shortage of available installers. Granted it’s not all you need to install. You must have a receiver that you can output to cat5, a hub (and or extender), and finally the speakers on the receiving end. This site will educate you as to what technologies exist and what components you need to build your own system. Check out our 'types of products' link to learn more.

One of the main companies behind this technology is A-BUS.  They manufacture many of the OEM parts that are available for this technology.  Companies such as Honeywell and Harman Kardon license this technology for distributed audio products.  Please see our companies link to learn more.

Want to connect with other do it yourself ers?  We have provided a bulletin board system so you can share your installation experiences with others or ask questions about issues you run up against.
